Current data suggests there are roughly 1.2 million abdominal hernia repairs in the United States each year. Out of those, a large portion of them are inguinal repairs, with a smaller minority developing into an incisional hernia.
Why the robotic approach to these conditions? The gold standard treatment for abdominal wall hernia is surgery with mesh implantation. The robotic platform allows the surgeon to perform those surgeries while decreasing wound morbidity, which is extremely high in open repairs (up to 25-30%), in an ergonomic and easier manner compared to traditional laparoscopy.
With a strong practical focus, the course will include anatomical, clinical and surgical oriented lectures, anatomical dissection with hands-on supervision and clinical case discussions to consolidate learning objectives. The face-to-face relationship between the faculty and participants makes this course an important technical experience for all specialists who want to improve their abilities to treat abdominal wall hernias as well as better address diagnosis for patients presenting with these hernias.
